Yesterday, September 8th, was International Literacy Day, a time dedicated to the importance of literacy in all communities. According to the US Department of Education, since 1983, more than 10 million Americans reached the 12th grade basic reading skills. The United Way estimates that the cost of illiteracy to businesses and taxpayers is $20 billion per year. The National Institute for Literacy reports that one out of five adults read at or below the fifth grade level.
