Like almost any guitar under $1000 and even many over $1000, you must get this set up. It usually costs about $50. For most people they will only have to have this done once to experience a world of difference in the playability and tone . Most of the setup you could do yourself if you looked it up but adjusting the string nut takes special tools and some skill and once it's done it's good until it breaks if that ever happens.

Epiphones are nice but look over it for a while and make sure there are no glaring defects in the craftsmanship. The quality control like on most budget guitars is not perfect. High string action is not this, nor is a dead fret, those should be fixed by the setup or the tech will tell you the guitar is defective. Tell the tech you want their opinion so that if it's a lemon you can return it. Most guitars are fine. I worked in a guitar shop and saw 100s of these. If my memory serves this is the low price and maybe it went for $299 a few times during the biggest sale of the year, but it's hard to tell because there are so many little variations of Les Pauls. This is in the higher end range of Epiphone Les Pauls.
