Some couples have been tripped up by bureaucratic rules concerning spousal benefits, despite the overturn last year of the federal law banning gay marriage.

       






Lawrence Schacht cannot collect spousal Social Security benefits on his late husband’s account because they hadn’t been married long enough --  even though they had been together since 1953.
